Easy Ways to Add Storage Areas in Your Home

There is no better way to get organized and declutter your home than by adding storage areas. Here are five ideas that are easy and economical.

1. Mudroom Bench You can buy them or build them, but they do amazing things. A bench with a storage area beneath and hooks and a shelf above give you many benefits: a place to sit and change outdoor shoes, a place to store them out of sight, hooks for jackets, purses, dog leashes and umbrellas, and a top shelf for picnic baskets or bike helmets.
2. Ottoman Instead of a living room or rec room coffee table, substitute an ottoman – a big surface with under-lid storage. You can use the ottoman for seating, as a table or a footrest. Underneath, you can store blankets, books, board games or photo albums. On top, set a tray to hold beverages, magazines and travel books.

3. Cubbies They’re easy to buy in all sizes, and you can stain or paint them to match any room. Cubbies on the back of a desk can declutter your working space of tape, post-it notes, scissors, staplers, clocks, plants and pictures. Cubbies also can be placed on kitchen counters or sideboards.

4. Coat Racks Coat racks hold an amazing number of coats, purses, umbrellas, scarves, hats and accessories, freeing up closet space while making access easy to things you use every day. A great way to declutter your foyer.

5. Pot Racks In the old days, people hung their everyday pots, pans and cooking utensils on exposed copper tubing in the kitchen. In modern homes, these items made their way onto cooktops and countertops. A pot rack will provide wall space for pots and pans, cleaning up your counters and making it easier to create home-cooked meals.
